Disobedience and Ambiguity in the User Interface

This paper describes the features that distinguish recognition based computer interfaces by considering the interaction process and using a simple model to assist in the definition of some of the terms associated with these interfaces. With reference to the user experience, Disobedience, Ambiguity, and Error-Proneness are described. The authors suggest that disobedience is a useful term that separates recognition technologies from other input technologies. Whilst acknowledging that disobedience is very difficult to eliminate, practical strategies are proposed which can limit the causes of disobedience in recognition based interfaces.
